The goal of transcribing is to be able to hear and understand what's going on in the music. And, how your part contributes to the whole, an integral step in music mastery.

Level 4:
A note for note transcription of the piece or your part.

Skills required:

  • Advanced level theory
  • Advanced level ear training
  • Advanced level technique
  • Advanced level reading
  • Advanced level notational skills

There are levels to each of these stills. Musicians hone them over a lifetime. I'm 45 years in. I still do it weekly. Call me.

The Power of Transcribing Level 2

The goal of transcribing is to be able to hear and understand what's going on in the music. And, how your part contributes to the whole, an integral step in music mastery.

Level 2
  1. Drummers: What is the basic drumbeat? Does it change? High hats or ride cymbal? Looped or through composed groove? Is the crash cymbal prominent? Fills?
  2. Pianists: In a pop piece, is the piano or keyboard active and prominent or slow and supportive? Jazz pianists, how is the left hand supporting the melody? Call and response? Ostinato? Which register is the melody and solo played in?
  3. Does the harmony played follow the fakebook changes? In Pop, does the score match the performance? If not, make corrections. Now sing the roots of the chord progression on pitch and in time. Memorise this.
  4. Learn the melody the way it was performed, not the way it was written. Drummers play this exercise on your snare drum.

Skills required:

  • Basic theory
  • Basic ear training abilities
  • Some basic technique on the instrument
  • Beginner reading skill
  • Basic notational skill
